The vendor of this 1981 Austin Allegro is the Bangers & Cash Restoring Classics team. They write:
According to Google, the direct translation of ‘Allegro’ from Italian to English is ‘cheerful’. So, how a car went from that to earning the nickname ‘all aggro’ to those who have owned one is beyond us. So in July 2025, we thought we’d find out.
With many Allegros having succumbed to the dreaded ‘R’ word (rust for those who would prefer to remain ignorant), it meant that we did not have plenty of choice when it came to buying one. The one we did stumble upon, however, came with a love letter from the previous owner, who informed us the car was named ‘Phoebe’. With one of the Restos team (Holly, the Series Producer) having a dog also named Phoebe, the writing was on the wall, and no further thorough checks were undertaken…she was ours for just under £4k (the car, not the dog).
We took the not-so-cute-and-fluffy Phoebe to the team at Classic Car Lab in Otley for the mechanics there to take a look. They were somewhat disappointed by the big reveal, but as soon as it was off the trailer and up on a ramp, they were pleasantly surprised! There were some definite, obvious areas of concern; the bodywork was average, and there was a blowing exhaust, but thankfully, Phoebe, the car, had been well cared for over the years.
Work on this one includes:
The engine is actually a 1.7, as opposed to a 1.5, as stated on the logbook, so we’ve stuck a badge on the front to say so.
Our cheery Allegro comes with a clean MOT until Feb 2027.
PLEASE NOTE: We take great pride in restoring our vehicles, but they are classics; they will not be immaculate, and they will no doubt need ongoing maintenance and repair. We suggest you make your own checks first.
