The vendor of this 1969 Sachsenring Trabant 601 S Saloon is the Bangers & Cash Restoring Classics team. They write:
We purchased this car for the programme back in the summer of ‘25…it was warm. The sun was turned on. Big coats were a distant memory. So why we thought we’d best wait until the depths of winter to start any work on the car in the coldest garage we know at Jonny May’s near Malton, is a question all the camera crew wanted to know the answer to. At least those frosty mornings and foggy landscapes helped recreate a 1970’s chilly eastern European setting…worth it?
This car however was perhaps one of the best vehicles we’ve ever bought, we were expecting square metres of revolutionary communist rot but underneath this was as solid as the Brandenburg Gate. Our only issue was the small fact we couldn’t get it to start. Mechanics Jonny May & Mark Juggins got their heads together and sifted through all the German paperwork which accompanied the car and then followed the step by step guide carefully as to how to start it.
Turns out, one of our production crew had left the fuel tap open. So all they needed to do to get it running was top it up with 2-stroke fuel mixture and ensure the tap was closed when off so it didn’t leak all over the garage floor…again.
Along with getting it to run, other jobs included:
The car is now coming out of its winter hibernation with us and is ready for the next owner to have some fun. It also carries with it a clean MOT - wonderbar!

PLEASE NOTE: We take great pride in restoring our vehicles but they are classics, they will not be immaculate and they will no doubt need ongoing maintenance and repair. We suggest you make your own checks first.
