For some of the Restoring Classics team, the Mk1 Subaru Impreza Turbo was the poster on the wall ….next to that one of Def Leppard, INXS, or, if you're Dave Mathewson, Celine Dion.

When the opportunity to make your teenage dreams come true arrives in a Pickering car lot, you have to grab it - particularly if those dreams only cost three and a bit grand and they look like they’ve never been hot-footing it away from the law on Police, Camera, Action with Alastair Stewart.

The auction hosts plenty of rally-inspired Imprezas, but this one was genuinely a stage winner. For decades, it had successfully navigated the pimpers and the modders; it boasted a pea-shooter exhaust, asthmatic callipers, and under the bonnet revealed a standard-sized turbo. Very rare!

We took our almost one-off, bog-standard Impreza to Scooby Clinic in Derbyshire and asked them to keep it exactly that way. They did.. but found plenty of holes and rust along the way.

Work included:

• Remove rear 1/4 panels, repair the inner wings with fabricated plates welded and sealed, replace N/S/R 1/4 panel with new, add repair arch section on O/S/R 1/4 panel, seal up before re-fitting to vehicle
• Replace complete boot floor due to water ingress, rotting original, seal & paint as required
• New bonnet added and a full repaint of the whole vehicle in its O/E Subaru red 559. This included complete car, all four side skirts, spoiler, boot lid, bonnet, vents, bonnet scoop, 2 door mirrors, and 4 door handles
• Wheels had tyres removed, shot-blasted and powder coated in O/E silver, tyres re-fitted and balanced
• Under body & suspension
• Remove all suspension, rear "T" brace, arms and hubs, fuel tank, brakes, front and rear sub-frames, send off for shot-blast & powder coating in black.
• Reassemble all suspension arms using new bushes all round, replace all 4 wheel bearings, all four brake callipers, discs and pads all round, brake fluid upgrade to Dot 5:1, new springs and shock absorbers, and 2 new front wishbones and ball joints.
• Laser geom set up
• Lanogaurd rust proofing cavity wax treated
• Full cam belt kit including all idlers & tensioner supplied and fitted. On these cars, the cam sprockets are Bakelite with a metal center which rusts, expands, and cracks the Bakelite, causing the sprocket to fail. These cam sprockets were all showing signs of cracking, so they were replaced with billet alloy upgrades from Roger Clark Motorsport
• New oil & filter
• Coolant change
• Brake fluid change
• Gear box and diff oil changed
• General full service

Needless to say, we’ve spent way too much on a passion-project, but anyone who remembers Colin McRae or Richard Burns airborne in a Welsh forest will understand why this is one car worth every single penny. It now has a clean MOT until July 2026.
