Build details of Locost 7 OAT 969V
Donor car, Mk 2 Ford Escort 1300 Ghia Purchased Mid 1998 and dismantled late 1998.
Car built in my Farm workshop during 1999 and entered for SVA late 1999. The actual SVA test took place at Beverley HGV testing station on the first day back at work after the Christmas/new year break in January 2000, the car passed the SVA first time. ( By passing the SVA instead of the old MOT system this allowed the car to be registered with a V registration of the same year as the donor vehicle and not a Q registration).
The car was used regularly until it was stored in my workshop on SORN.
Because I lived on our farm which had a 320 metre drive I was able to keep the car mobile and running in good order by driving up and down the drive several times each month without affecting the SORN declaration.
I eventually replaced the 1300 x flow engine with a 1600 x flow which I bought from a friend who operates a small garage locally and is also a classic rally car competitor.
The 1600 x flow has a 711M block which is thick walled and therefore safely boreable.
I had the work done by Park engineering of Malton who are experts at this process and they advised me of what was best, they also checked the engine thoroughly and fitted new core plugs. They also sourced the correct oversized pistons of the make which they recommended. The car is also fitted with webber twin forty carbs and a geared starter motor because of the higher compression.
I never had the hp rating checked but it is very quick on acceleration considering it only weighs 609 kg with a full tank of petrol. ( The car had to be weighed with a full tank of petrol when presented for it's SVA test)
The car has never been out in Rain, Snow or frost or on salted roads and always garaged.
The car was put back on the road last summer 2023 and was fully taxed and MOT. DVLA then approached me and at their suggestion the car is now registered as exempt thus free of Tax and Mot.
