The vendor has provided the following:
The vendor of this 1965 Mercedes-Benz W111 is the Bangers & Cash Restoring Classics team. They write:
One of the most iconic models from a lot of iconic Mercs.
This 220 SEb was bought by the Bangers & Cash: Restoring Classics team in August as a possible project for the TV show. They have provided the following:
A rare factory RHD car JGU 289C was (and still is) a DB050 white 220SEb cabriolet with red upholstery and a black mohair hood. It was delivered to Woking Motors (Mercedes Dealership) in Surrey in May 1965.
With the help of the Mercedes-Benz Club UK register we can add quite a bit of history All the paperwork and engine/chassis numbers match up to the Mercedes factory records, with the original UK registration mark being HPK 738C.
The intriguing reason for the re-registration is because the car was repossessed by Croydon Council having been found in a garage in Norwood (with no registration) in the ‘80s and subsequently sold on to the previous vendor, who re-registered it and was thankfully given an age-related 1965 plate.
That vendor was a long-term Mercedes enthusiast who has sadly passed away. The paperwork shows JGU being off the road since 2005 and garage stored with its two seater Pagoda sibling.
Prior to 2005 it had been restored, and has MOTs, a new stainless exhaust, a new hood, an iffy respray and some welding from that time.
You should definitely come and have a look at JGU if you are an enthusiast of these cars. Find another RHD one that needs recommissioning/restoration. Yes it requires work, but what a car - a keeper for someone, worth a lot of money and very likely to hold its value.
However, it will take too long for our deadlines to do it justice. We did manage to get the car going, and everything works - but to bring it up to the standard that we would be happy with to then sell on would take an eternity and blow the budget.
Clearly a lot of that expense and money would come back when done and sold as it’s a rare, high value car - but we cannot get the time back and would miss several deadlines for the next series and the one after that probably. It’s a car that needs to be tackled in stages over time, and we have a number of vehicles like that on the go already - and have just bought an E type on pallets.
So, somewhat reluctantly, we are admitting defeat on this one and putting it back in this sale for the next person to take on as a labour of love - this car really deserves that.
PLEASE NOTE: We have only done a minimal amount of work since we purchased it from Mathewsons Auctions and it is a long haul from a minter. We advise you to make your own vehicle checks before bidding.
