1963 CHEVROLET GMC CORVAIR

Sold for £7,750

Lot details

Make: CHEVROLET GMC
Model: CORVAIR
Registration: OYM 38A
Engine Size (cc): 2294
Current Speedometer Reading: 51,650
Year of Manufacture: 1963
Date First Registered: 04/05/1990
Current V5: YES
Location: THORNTON DALE

Current V5 present. Large history files include MOT certificates, owner's handbook, invoices and manuals.

Yellow, white hood and upholstery. A short test drive proved enjoyable and revealed no major issues other than it will soon require a clutch, OK for now. Impressive smooth, positive gear change, responsive, powerful engine. Some minor panel corrosion and poor paint finish are easily addressed. It has proved a main attraction whilst on display prior to the auction. "Rare and very photogenic"

The vendor has provided the following:

  • 1963 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder, 2294 cc, 6 cylinder, 4 speed manual, left hand drive.
  • Convertible (cover for when the soft top is down is in the trunk).
  • Petrol (I was using petrol with Lead Replacement additive before the introduction of E10 etc. I assume it should now be E5 + additive).
  • I have owned the car since the summer of 1990, when I bought it from the first UK owner, imported 1990.
  • The car was probably an Arizona or West Coast car, certainly since the 1980s and possibly before.
  • I had it in professional/air conditioned storage for approx. 10 years, with regular checks, MOT maintained etc. It has been in my own garage for the vast majority of the other 20+ years of my ownership.
  • I have had much work done over the years (pretty full set of receipts included), most of which (after initial work when I first acquired it) was unfortunately necessitated because of under-use rather than anything else. Sadly, it is one of two “classics” I own, and has never got the use it deserves. It benefits from being started regularly – it can otherwise need a little encouragement, such as Damp Start.
  • MOT and tax exempt. I last had it MOT’d in September 2016, but have no reason to think it wouldn’t pass now if tested.
  • Mileage on clock of under 52,000. I added less than 4,000 to the 48,000 recorded in 1990. I have no way of knowing if that is accurate, although over the years several mechanics have said to me that it probably is, given the general condition of the car and vehicle.
  • It has always been this yellow colour throughout my ownership, but I think was originally a metallic turquoise. If I had decided to keep this car rather than my 1956 MG Magnette, I would have had the minor surface rust dealt with, and then had the car re-sprayed. As far as I know, the interior is all original (including the radio).
  • There is a box with the car which contains a number of original Shop Manuals, a Chiltons Guide and a Performance Portfolio. And an original Arizona number plate. Parts are easily available from several online operators, in particular Clarks Corvair Parts, which has been around since the marque was launched.
