1928 AUSTIN SEVEN CHUMMY TOURER

YV 325

The Austin Seven 4 seat tourer, or ‘Chummy’ was introduced in 1922 and continued in production until 1931. Numerous
modifications were introduced throughout production including changes to body shape, the earliest models were referred to as
‘coop shuttle’ and ‘pram hood’. The body tub was made of aluminium with steel floor, bonnet, and wings. Brakes were initially 6”
diameter and beaded edge tyres were fitted. In 1924 brake size was increased to 7”. Magneto ignition was replaced by coil ignition
in 1928. Radiator cowls were originally painted black but in 1928 were nickel plated and from 1930, chrome plated. The very latest
‘Chummies’ had all steel bodies.

ORIGINAL SPECIFICATION

An open four-seat body over patented Austin Seven triangular chassis

ENGINE 4-cylinder 56mm bore, 76mm stoke, capacity 747.5 cc side valve with two main bearing crankshaft. BHP 13.5
at 3000 rpm. Magneto ignition with manual adjustment at steering wheel. Thermo-siphon cooling system.

GEARBOX 3-speed crash with reverse
SUSPENSION Transverse semi-elliptic spring at the front and quarter-elliptic at the rear. Adjustable friction disc shock

absorbers fitted to front and rear.
ELECTRICS 6 volt. Foot operated starter motor.
BRAKES Cable operated four-wheel brakes with 7” drums. Footbrake operates rear drums and handbrake operates

front.

DIMENSIONS Wheelbase – 6’ 3”: Track – F. 3’ 4”: Weight 8 ¼ cwt: Turning circle – 32’.

payment for restoration work of another Austin Seven

01 June 2000 Purchased from Mr R Hood by Capt Douglas Malcolm Goodwin (Curly) of

Malmesbury. A former Vulcan Bomber pilot.

April 2001 Restoration by Mr R Hood commenced. Several modifications were made
during restoration to improve driveability. This included fitment of a 1933
rubber mounted two bearing engines with new phoenix crankshaft, coil
ignition, high compression cylinder head, side draught carburettor with
mechanical fuel pump coupled to a four-speed gearbox with synchromesh
on 3 rd and 4 th .

October 2002 Restoration Completed.
23 September 2018 Purchased by current owner Andrew McLaughlin of Preston, Lancashire.
