The vendor has provided the following:

The vendor of this 1972 MG Midget is the Bangers & Cash Restoring Classics team. They write:

We bought GUS 699L from Mathewsons Auctions in June 2024 when we were very excited to drive away with a car that…well, drives! Having bought vehicles previously that have been in the market for a full-blown restoration, our intentions with this one were to keep the budget tight and to just give this little car the ‘right amount’ of work. Whatever that means…

We took it to SH Restorations near Keighley who were the needle to our ‘light recommissioning’ bubble. We spent the day filming their assessment of the vehicle and we left feeling a little deflated, but certainly a lot more aware of what we were thinking of undertaking with GUS 699L.

Although the restoration was not something we could take on (TV production schedules and strict budgets do sometimes take precedence) GUS 699L does come with an incredible back story and it would be wonderful for it to end up with an enthusiastic new owner!

The previous owner provided the following information about ‘Gus’ (which we haven’t independently verified):

Gus won the lottery entry for the Channel Tunnel inauguration London to Paris rally. The first train through the tunnel was loaded with 100 cars from 100 years of manufacturing. The front car contained Queen Elizabeth and the president of France. Gus represented the year 1972. Before the start there was a dinner at the Royal Automobile Club in London and after the run was a banquet in the Elysee Palace in Paris. The rally plaque comes with the car. Gus was also involved with the opening of the Skye bridge where a top-down run across the bridge was given to Michael Forsythe, the Scottish secretary.

Please note: we are selling this car as we bought it, so no additional work has been undertaken and we encourage any potential buyer to make their own checks.
