The 5-digit odometer shows 11,597 however the car's mileage is believed to be 100,00 miles higher than this.

1979 FORD ESCORT (MK2) RS2000

KEY FACTS

  • This Mk2 Ford Escort RS2000 is a handsome example of the sought-after classic performance car, enhanced by a few discerning modifications and benefitting from a prior respray.
  • It is powered by a replacement 2.0-litre naturally aspirated ‘Pinto’ inline-four, fed by two 48DCOE Weber carburettors and fitted with an uprated FR33 fast road camshaft, which sends power to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.
  • The five-digit odometer shows 11,597 miles, however the car’s true mileage is believed to be 100,000 miles higher than this, making the total mileage 111,597.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • Believed to have previously been finished in yellow, this Escort RS2000 was later repainted in its current hue of Venetian Red, which is offset by a black front grille, rear spoiler, bumpers, door mirror covers, side stripes, and RS2000 decals.
  • Inside, the sports seats are trimmed in black Aldridge ‘betacloth’ with leatherette backs and sides. The door cards are also trimmed in leatherette with polished metal inlays, and the seller notes that new black carpets have recently been fitted.
  • The car rides on a set of period-correct 13-inch four-spoke alloy wheels with ‘RS’ centre caps, shod in a matching set of Federal Super Steel 63S tyres.
  • The factory specification includes a three-spoke vinyl-trimmed steering wheel, ventilation and a heater, a heated rear windscreen, a cigarette lighter, and fog lights.
  • This RS2000 has been fitted with a replacement Pinto engine with a pair of 48DCOE Weber carburettors and an FR33 fast road camshaft. The suspension has been replaced with adjustable Bilstein dampers, and the brakes uprated with Wilwood callipers, housing drilled and grooved brake discs.
  • The vehicle will be accompanied by its V5C and a selection of MOT test certificates.

CONDITION

  • The resprayed Venetian Red paintwork is described by the seller as being good condition, showing some areas of micro blistering on the front and rear wings, as well as a crack on the offside front wing. There are also some chips on the driver’s door mirror cover and light stone chipping on the front valance, but elsewhere there are no major wear noted.
  • Inside, the owner describes the trim as being in average condition, with a general ‘patina’ of age and use, and they also state that the headlining would benefit from replacement. The seats have recently been retrimmed and the carpets have been replaced, and as such are in great shape.
  • The seller is not aware of any electrical or mechanical faults, and they state that there are no warning lights showing on the dashboard.
  • The car’s last MOT test was conducted on 26 March 2021 at an indicated 10,960 miles, though this was likely to have been 110,960 miles displayed on the five-digit odometer. This resulted in a first-time pass with no warnings or advisories.
  • The car is now believed to be exempt from mandatory MOT testing as it is more than 40 years old.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • The seller notes that the car’s engine was rebuilt 1,000 miles prior to sale, and a partial restoration was carried out five years ago.
  • Sadly, there is very little paperwork to confirm the work performed on the car.

SUMMARY

This Ford Escort RS2000 is a rare classic performance saloon, offered with some discerning upgrades, and noted to have benefitted from a recent respray. While its next owner may wish to have a general inspection and service carried out given the car’s lack of maintenance history, it should make an exciting companion for weekend drives and car show visits alike, and a fantastic addition to any collection of fast Fords.
