Shellmex Globe Steel Sculpture

The team at Bangers & Cash bought this classic piece of automobilia back in December - a beautiful example of an original Shellmex glass globe that was designed to sit atop a petrol pump. I believe this globe dates from the 1960s, represents a rare, vintage find and they’ve transformed it into something quite extraordinary.

They write:

We thought this Shellmex globe would make a perfect standing lamp, so sent it off to highly acclaimed metal sculptor Steve Blaylock in Harrogate. Steve of ‘Creation Sculpture’, uses the very last Sheffield stainless steel ever manufactured in the UK for his unique and bespoke creations. Steve famously designed and created the current Blue Peter Ship sculpture which can be found outside the BBC buildings in Media City - and he helped comedian Johnny Vegas fit out his dream glamping site in Nidderdale.

The creative brief for Steve was to make a base for the ‘lamp’ that embodied the Art Deco styling of the Shellmex globe and also echoed the design of the original petrol pump. What Steve has created is truly exceptional. Standing at nearly seven feet tall, the Shellmex lamp is an astonishing and striking piece, completely unique and, quite frankly, a bit bonkers - potentially a highly collectable work of art.

Steve spent many weeks putting together a ‘mood board’ before designing a prototype prior to the construction of the skeleton framework. He painstakingly built up the structure through precise welding in a process he describes as ‘compositionally organic’.

Steve says: “For the base of the structure I drew inspiration from the Hoover Building in West London, the rest of the piece was influenced by the Art Deco buildings of New York, especially the Chrysler building.”

Stainless steel was combined with copper recycled from old water cylinders. The natural ageing of the copper has resulted in beautiful colouration due to patina. Other areas have benefited from verdigris and have a deep luxurious green tinge.

Distinctive and quirky, the floor standing Shellmex globe lamp is sold with fully working PAT tested electrical components.

Available to view in the Thornton le Dale showroom.
