The vendor of this 1980 Austin Morris Maxi is the Bangers & Cash Restoring Classics team. They write:

It was November 2024 we asked Dave for a list of some of his favourite cars, and after reeling off some fairly expensive rally pedigrees…he let it slip he loves a Maxi!

So we found just the one.

‘What is there to do to it?’ we naively asked ourselves on that first look round…well, the answer came rather quickly when Roger and Katie at The Motorist hopped in for a test drive. The hydrogas suspension system was completely shot and a ride down the road resembled another of Dave’s favourites…jelly and blancmange.

We got to work on the necessary improvements which included:

  • Regassing the hydrogas suspension and a new rear suspension pipe
  • New clutch
  • Reseal of exhaust system
  • 5 new tyres
  • New rear brake pipe
  • Front brakes all cleaned up
  • New rear brake shoes and cylinders
  • New lower ball joints
  • New steering rack gaiters
  • New three quarter sills to n/s and o/s
  • Welding and fabrication where required to make it safe

It’s now a much smoother ride than it was this time last year and comes with a fresh MOT.

The only element outstanding to make this car perfect that we haven’t addressed is a worn synchro.

This is noticeable when going from 3rd - 4th gear and if changing down. Please bear this in mind.

PLEASE NOTE: We take great pride in restoring our vehicles but they are classics, they will not be immaculate and they will no doubt need ongoing maintenance and repair. We suggest you make your own checks first.
