Current V5 present. Paperwork includes a Mercedes wallet containing Owner's manuals, a maintenance booklet containing 3 stamps, previous V5s, old tax discs, MOT certificates, a Mercedes-Benz - The 1960s by Bernd S. Koehling book, specification booklet, and various invoices for parts and work.
The vendor has provided the following:
Mercedes 280s, 1970.
This is a truly remarkable time warp classic. The car was delivered new in Manchester UK in 1970. The owner after 5 years shipped the car to his holiday home in Cyprus where it would remain for 39 years. The car was shipped back in 2013 and sold to the previous owner where it was garaged and used as a collector’s piece. I purchased 4 years later, and the car has been stored in a heated garage to date.
This car has avoided winters and salt roads for most of its life and the condition reflects that, the underside is as clean as the top side. On return to the UK new brake hoses and brake callipers were replaced and new shock absorbers all round. The carburettors were replaced with twin Webbers which are much better than the original zeniths. The car was tuned and serviced in 2021 since which time it has only be driven occasionally for maintenance purposes.
The tex mex vinyl interior is in stunning condition with no rips or tears. I replaced a modern radio with an original radio which just needs the wires connecting (this cost £500 from the
US). This is the UK model without the US fuel injection and is much rarer than the many US left hand drive imports you will see. An original RHD UK supplied car with no rust is almost
impossible to find as an original car and therefore is a unique collector’s piece.
The car has a rare auto gearbox which was a £250 extra in 1970. This car new cost more than a new Porsche 911 in 1970. The car was the first choice for celebrities and the rich in the early 1970s and has become a sort after classic after being used in the TV adverts for a car insurance company.
This car was designed by the legendary Paul Bracq who also designed the Pagoda and many of Mercedes most respected models in the 1960-1980 years. The car is in original condition and the stunning Horizon blue. The paint requires some treatment, small stone chips require attention and the car has been polished many times over the years which has left the paint thinner than normal. We started to blend and touch in then decided that a blow over the whole car would get her to A1 condition throughout. Because of the lack of filling and preparation we had 2 quotes of £3,000 and £3,500 to complete this in south east. The trading prices of normal US import LHD cars have risen and good A1 examples fetch large sums, With the paintwork restored this unique UK example would undoubtably fetch a very good sum from a collector.
The car comes complete with a new set of white wall tires which are stored in the boot for fitting. The exhaust was replaced in 2021 with a new stainless steel exhaust but ideally the front section that connects to the engine would be replaced too. This could be completed by a specialist bespoke company for around £350. The driver’s door lock does not work but there is a new door that comes with the car ready to fit.
Very reluctant to sell this car but I am moving to Spain and its not feasible to take with me. The car comes with extensive collection of service receipts and import documentation as well as the original sales brochure and letter from the dealership. The full set of car booklets and driver information books also are present. These books alone can achieve a few hundred pounds. There is a selection of new service items, plugs, filters etc. This car with a freshen of the paintwork will be an A1 car in original condition, a dry rust free original condition 280S from the uk is almost unheard of these days, a great investment or turnaround car.
