Often overlooked and under-loved, the Alfa Romeo 164 was a curious car that immediately caught the eye of the Restoring Classics team.
It was the model designed to keep Alfa independent and financially solvent, the 164 would ultimately fail in that task but it left its mark as the vehicle that elevated the Italian manufacturer to quality and reliability levels where it competed with the best of Germany and Japan.
This 164 had just one owner for most of its life, super-low mileage of 57k and a bodywork that was free of that non-optional extra…rust.
Okay it wouldn't start but that didn’t stop us from bidding more than 5k for it.
Edinburgh’s Edward Labinjoh and his decades of Alfa experience took control of the recommission. He had never seen one as clean: “It must have spent its life in a garage, in the South of France.”
The underneath was reassuringly solid.
Edward had the motor running in no-time and brakes, suspension, timing chain, an ill-fitting door and electrical gremlins were all sorted prior to a full service.
After it was given 12 months MOT, R713 KRC was driven by a Bangers team member from Edinburgh to North Yorkshire without a single warning light or enforced stop.
It is now for sale and we are convinced you will not find a cleaner, more solid example of this classic Italian sports-executive saloon.
If the new owner wants to make it absolutely perfect then we have noted the following: water temp gauge not working properly, mileage display intermittent, minor oil leak.
