The vendor has provided the following:

Hillman GT - Lot 386

The Bangers team bought this car in the May 2022 auction. Most thought it was a Minx, some said it could be a Hunter.

To be honest, we were unsure until we started looking into the history of the car prior to bidding on it. Only then did we realise it was neither Minx nor Hunter, but a pedigree Rootes car all of its own - a Hillman GT.

This car had lived almost all its life in the ownership of one family. A Hillman GT was on the Rootes stand at the 1969 London Motor Show, and that was it. £962 exchanged hands. It remained in that family for 50 years until being sold on in 2019.

The GT is clearly somewhere between a Minx and a Hunter. Made in small numbers, outsold by its Cortina competition from the word go - and within a year replaced by the Hunter GT which itself was swiftly replaced by the Hunter GLS.

This car has been beautifully restored by a real Rootes craftsman. Not overdone, kept as original as possible - it is a car of its era and it drives much better than imagined, quite the GT!

The restoration of this vehicle was completed in September 2023 but instead of selling it straight away, we leant it to the British Motor Museum in Gaydon, where it remained on display for 18 months.

We absolutely love this car. It is the essence of Bangers & Cash, mixed with a faint whiff of Hai Karate.

It has already been on the TV programme, so if you would like to watch the restoration (or at least what we could capture of it!) then you can catch up on U&Yesterday - Series 3, Episode 5.

PLEASE NOTE: This car has been sitting in a museum for 18 months, it has not been MOT’d and we have not given it a mechanical check before auction. We recommend you do your own checks prior to bidding.
