The vendor of this 1984 Norton Interpol 2 is the Bangers & Cash Restoring Classics team. They write:
Back in the 1980s this bike was better known for chasing criminals on the mean streets of South Yorkshire. Fast forward 40 years when we bought it at auction, it was a non-starter, so jumping off and chasing them on foot would’ve been quicker.
Though we like a challenge - and a challenge it was - we struggled to find anybody with the knowledge and the skills to fix Norton’s rotary Wankel engine, but then right under our noses, we found Graham Wilshaw from Startright Motorcycles in Leeds. They claim to be the only independent Norton rotary specialist in the world - so we were in the right place.
Graham spent more than 100 hours bringing our bike back to life. It now runs and even passed the ‘1 pound test’ - keeping a £1 coin standing whilst the engine turns over. Perhaps not something you’ll reap everyday enjoyment from, but it’s certainly a good party trick!
Work on the bike included:
We finished the bike earlier this year, but we sent it on loan to sit in the foyer at South Yorkshire Police where it used to serve. We have recently picked it up and had it serviced ready for the November auction - It now boasts an MOT until November 2025.
When these bikes were released sales were restricted to fleet customers: civilian police forces, military police forces (particularly the Royal Air Force Police), and the RAC. They were only made for 5 years so you may own one of a few remaining.
Please Note: We take great pride in restoring our vehicles but they are classics and will no doubt have imperfections. Please do your own checks before bidding.
