Frequently Asked Questions & Commission Rates

Q: Can Mathewson’s collect & deliver my Classic vehicle(s)?

A: Yes. We endeavour to collect & deliver wherever possible but occasionally we are unable to do this competitively to an area that we are not currently travelling to. In which case we work closely with a handful of outside contractors who provide an excellent service at favourable rates. (NB: We view & collect 80% of all auction entries...without charge ! )

Q: How long can I leave my new purchase at Mathewson’s before collection?

A: We offer free storage after each sale. Although we respectfully request that your new purchase is collected within 14 days. Longer only by agreement  NB: Please note. A deposit is required on sale day, see below for details, and balance is due within 48hrs of the auction close. This is to enable us to pay vendors within 7 days.

Q: What costs are involved for storage after this 14 day free period?

A: This depends on the individual circumstances. Please speak with a member of staff.

Q: Is a deposit required for my purchase?

A: Yes. £250 up to £2500, £500 for £2501~£5000 or £1000 for any sale figure over £5001. Payable on the fall of the hammer. Or on notification of a provisional bid acceptance.

Q: When is full payment required for my purchase?

A: Payment is required within 48hrs of the end of the Auction or before removal / collecction. This is to enable us to pay vendors within 7 days.

Q: What are the charges for the purchase / sale of my vehicle(s)?

A: Up to £500 = £50.00 + Vat

£501 - £1,000 = £75.00 + Vat

£1,001 - £2,000 = £150.00 + Vat

£2,001 - £20,000 = £7.5% + Vat

£20,000 and above = 5% + Vat

Bicycles, trailers & Automobilia = 10% + Vat

(Minimum Charge £5+Vat on Bicycles and Automobilia)

e.g. Sale Value £25,000.  £20,000 @ 7.5%. £5000 @ 5.0%.

Q: Accepted Payment methods?

A: The only accepted payment methods are:  Debit card / Bank Transfer / Cash (£5000 limit) Unfortunately we DO NOT ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS.

Q: What time do the auctions start?

A: The memorabilia section commences at 10am with vehicles following at 1pm. The vehicle section of the auction will not begin before 1pm.

Q: We would like to attend an auction, where can we park?

A: We are fortunate to have a large car & coach park within the old walled garden in the village. This will be well sign posted on auction day. The car park is deceiving as many feel this is located far from us and the village centre. This is not the case. The village centre is only 100 yards from the car park and we are located only 300 yards from the car park. This car park is Pay & Display.

Q: When can we view auction entries?

A: The 'official' viewing days are the Thursday & Friday before each sale & the morning of the sale. We actually operate 7 days a week at Thornton Le-dale so within reason you can view almost anytime. A quick phone call or email is advised if you intend travelling to view a specific item.

NB: The memorabilia section of the sales will continue to operate a strict accompanied viewing policy on either the Friday before each sale, or the morning of the sale.

Q: Can a 'un-sold' item be purchased after an Auction?

A: Yes. An offer can be placed on any item that fails to find a new home on Auction day.

This 'Buy Now Offer Period' is in place until Two weeks before a following sale, or unless otherwise instructed by the vendor. Any 'Buy Now'  price stated will be the total amount payable including all fees.(No item can we purchased within the Two week period leading up to a following sale. Our standard T&C's will apply.)

Q: Can an item be purchased before an Auction?

A: Yes & No! Only if the same item has been offered by ourselves through a previous Auction.

This question is touched on with the above Q&A.

Q. I cannot attend the sale. How else can I bid?

A. We offer both 'absentee' & 'telephone bids' to those that cannot attend an auction. These will both require a completed registration form, plus a pre-paid deposit. (This deposit is refundable should any absentee bid / telephone bid not be successful)

Q. How does the 'Buy Now' option work?

A. With the vendors permission, we offer a 'Buy Now' option on any item which fails to find a new home at one of our auctions. Seeing as we own our premises and are open 7 days a week it seemed the obvious thing to do. But please note. No item can be purchased before being offered through an auction.

Should you have any further queries please do not hesitate to drop us a phone call or email.
