Classic Cars – Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud

The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud and an almost identical Bentley S Type were both revealed in 1995. This Classic Car was beautifully proportioned, exquisitely manufactured and virtually silent in operation, it was everything a traditional Rolls owner could hope for. This was the second of Rolls standard steel cars after the post war Dawn and R-Type, with an off the peg factory body as opposed to a handcrafted made to measure aluminium item in the pre war tradition. There were various models built using this chassis, and with a long wheel base version of the standard body which gave an extra 4 inches of legroom in the rear. Both the Bentley and Rolls rode on a substantial, and resolutely separate, traditional box section chassis with independent front suspension and rear damper rates that you could alter from the drivers seat to suit the type of road the cars were to be taken on. The interior was nothing if not luxurious with beautifully crafted leather seats and fantastic walnut dashboard.

The engine in the Silver Cloud and S1 were basically the same 4.9 Litre power unit that was used in the previous R-Type and Silver Dawn, the only change being a new aluminium cylinder head and twin SU carburettors. Transmission in the start offered a choice of 4 speed synchronised manual or 4 speed Hydromatic automatic, the manual version was dropped after 18 months.

This Classic was built up until 1959 and its essence is still alive today in modern cars with obvious refinements to bring it up to date, to own and drive a Rolls or Bentley is a satisfying experience as long as your not looking for outstanding performance and are capable of affording the expensive maintenance. Nowadays they are cheaper to buy but very costly to restore.
