Classic Cars – Mercedes-Benz 540K
The 540k was fast and the epitome of the Teutonic sports car, solidly built around a supercharged 5.4 Litre, Straight 8, with all independent suspension, a luxury interior and some of the finest ever pre war styling.
Though it was one of the very few cars of the 1930s capable of 100mph on the open road, it was a very heavy car – nearly 2.5 tonnes when empty. Mercedez countered this by developing a larger engined version, the 5.4 litre 540K as opposed to the 5 Litre (500K) made an appearance in late 1936. The engine was pushing out 115bhp untuned, tuned it was a different machine - 180bhp, for the 1930’s this was big news. Without being supercharged this Classic was a quiet, docile carriage, the acceleration from low speeds being then pretty mild, with the supercharger it was an animal with fierce acceleration. A custom built body would take 10 weeks to complete, but that was an exception and not a rule – between 1933 and 1940 around 1000 supercharged Mercedes were built. Owners of this car had to be of stature and money because this car was very thirsty, none the less with its spatted wheels and streamlined fast back body, it still stands as one of the most beautiful closed cars of all time. This Classic Car will always be one to be remembered for its time even in modern times like today, the look of the car is simply breath taking with its perfect detail inside and out, its classic curves – beautifully streamlined, it is shocking to think something like this was born during the trying times in between the First and Second World Wars.
