Classic Cars – Jaguar XJR-S

This Classic Car has been around a long time and in 1988 Tom Walkinshaw of JaguarSport transformed its handling and thanks to a 333bhp, 6 Litre, V12 Engine its performance was vastly increased.

The first cars used the V12 in standard, 5.3 Litre, Lucas Injected, Marelli sparked form with a quoted output of 286bhp at 5150 rpm. There were uprated springs front and rear, new and specially developed gas dampers, modified rear trailing arms and new bushes to give the car a much tauter feel. The steering was sharpened up and given a bit more feedback, there was a sophisticated ABS braking system, bigger and quite eye catching restyled alloy wheels with wide, low profile tyres, and an aggressive new look to the body. As with all V12 engined XJSs it would be offered in 3 speed automatic transmission only, but with all the power this classic had this was no drawback in fact it may have been the best solution. It looked and felt much more like a sports car than the standard version and the exclusivity was underlined by the fact that the first 100 cars would be a special limited edition, designed to commemorate the Le mans win in June, these special edition versions had unique trim and colour options and individually numbered plates. For general production the custom trim and individual number plates were put to rest and the car went in to production, first to be launched for the UK market and then America and Europe.

With its 6 Litre, V12 Engine the Classic XJR-S now boasted 318bhp at 5250rpm, maximum speed of nearly 160mph, 0-60 in 6.5 seconds it was Jaguars fastest ever road car a statement which was upheld by various tests carried out by magazines and resulting in the agreement that the 6 Litre Jaguar XJR-S was the best overall High Performance coupe in the World.
