Classic Cars – Dodge Viper
Power and performance personified with no modern comforts, yet this brutal muscle car was a huge success when it came out and is still very popular. The attraction of Dodges uncompromising sports car lies in its sheer wickedness – a car worthy of the title Classic Car.
Initially the car was unveiled by a struggling Chrysler at the Detroit Auto Show in January 1989, the unique Viper caused a sensation. At this stage it was described as a concept car, Chryslers intentions were initially to keep the car a concept but with the floods of perspective customers throwing deposits at them. Enthusiasts that had been starved of no compromise sports cars like the Viper had been waiting for this day and were literally queuing up for it, Chrysler had to step up to the plate and consider to make the concept a car available for general production – this was something Chrysler were in desperate need of, The Viper would be the companies flagship and would turnaround there almost bankrupt state.
Once the car was available to the public any doubts about the Vipers character disappeared immediately as the V10 is started. It boasted 400bhp with a thunderous roar you can feel, its 6 gears were irrelevant, you could leave the car in fourth and drive it like it was an automatic, but then that wouldn’t be any fun. In any gear the Viper accelerates like a slow burning rocket, hard enough to be on the edge of unsettling even for those drivers that were used to very fast cars, the Viper had an 8 Litre, V10 Engine, could put out 400bhp, was more than capable of delivering a 0-60 time of 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 159mph.
Not only did the Dodge Viper raise Chryslers hopes and enforce their name in the car world in the states as well as the rest of the world, It is classed as a Classic Car even today with its beefy mean image, smooth lines and phenomenal power.
