Classic Cars – Alfa Romeo Spider

This classic car was first launched in 1966 at the Geneva Motor Show. The Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider was the last to be completed by the founder of the Turin based design house – Battista Pininfarnia.

At first sales were disappointing but no one would have believed that the basic model would have stayed in production for 27 years. The shape of the car was not much to be desired and admired initially, however the lines matured gracefully through a series of restyles over the years resulting in square tailed cars of the late 1980’s. Alfa’s classic twin cam engine evolved from 1600 through 1750 and even 1300cc variations to becoming a fully fledged 2 litre engine in 1971.

The Alfa Romeo Spider was always in its natural habitat on the open road where it is free to do its hunting, this version of the 2 litre in 1970 had the most torque. This being said – the Classic 1750 was rated the highest for its refinement and sweetness by most experts.

These cars were always highly priced, in 1969 the 1750 Spiders British price tag was not much less than that of a much faster E-Type – but with slick gear change, smooth steering and fine disc brakes, the Spider gave the driver much sought after involvement and satisfaction that few cars were capable of rivalling.

This Classic Car was civilised with a good ride and a water tight hood that could be pulled up by one hand. The first generation Spiders name Duetto was chosen after 140,000 suggestions were sent into a contest – the name was intended to symbolise the Twin Cam engine 2 seater combination. The Duetto Spider had a few other suggestions for its name: Pizza, Sputnik, Panther and even Al Capone – imaginative if any thing.
